EVERETT, Wash. —
Police arrested several people involved in an identity theft ring and there are at least 100 victims.
Police said the people stole IDs and used them to cash counterfeit checks.
The five people made their first court appearances in Everett on Friday.
According to court documents, Michael Suryan was arrested at the Shoreline Rodeway Inn Thursday night.
Police believe Suryan is the mastermind of the group, and he is currently being held on $200,000 bail.
“They have folks that go out and gather financial information from people, basically stealing it, breaking into mailboxes, stealing it from cars,” said Ryan Dalberg of the Everett Police Department.
Detectives have been watching Richard Walter and Latasha Chambers since mid-October, and arrested the two at a Safeway five blocks from the motel.
Court documents said when officers arrested Chambers, she dropped a counterfeit check as she was being handcuffed. She is also being held on $200,000 bail.
Vanessa King and Marcel Page are also accused in the ring.
The Secret Service is now analyzing evidence from the motel room, where police described it as an identity theft headquarters.
Officers found laptop computers, hard drives and fake checks.
“Our victims, the victims region-wide, not just in Everett, but region-wide, could be upwards of a 100 people and growing,” said Dalberg.
Police expect to arrest six more people.
