Sex Offender Released; Mom: He Is Likely Capable Of Killing Someone

SHELTON, Wash. —

A sex offender who has threatened to kill people was set free Friday afternoon. His own mother says she's worried he could even kill her.

She shared her fears about her son's release and what she calls "the failure of the system" with KIRO 7 reporter Richard Thompson.

"He should not ever be out," said the mother of level three sex offender James Christy. She asked us to protect her identity.

The state Department of Corrections said Christy currently does not meet the legal criteria for civil commitment at Western State Hospital, which is where Christy has spent most of the past decade since being released from prison in 1998. Christy has not been charged with a sex offense or any other felony since 1992.

Christy's mother knows her son claims to have 20 young sexual abuse victims and "he's threatened to kill anyone who calls him a sex offender."

"Jim has been mentally ill for 30 years," said his mother.

Upon his release from custody Friday, Christy is registered to live as a transient on a beach near Shelton according to police. Police report that he has a curfew between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.; during that time he must remain on the beach.

Christy is being released with a 30-day supply of his medication, said police. He will also be required to check in with a community corrections officer every day as well as be subjected to drug and alcohol testing.

She fears he will not take his medication and start using drugs and alcohol that could put everyone, including his own mother, in danger.

Jim said, “Mom if the voices tell me to kill you, I will," she said.

And as heartbreaking as it is for her to admit, she believes he could do it.

“He is probably capable of killing someone."

Christy's mother doesn't believe Western State Mental Hospital should have released her son. She says it was dangerous decision for him and the public.

“I love my son but I want to see him get the help he needs," said Christy’s mother. "He needs to be in an environment where he's safe and the public is safe."

According to police, if he fails to meet any of the requirements upon his release he can be rearrested.
