SEATTLE —

A convicted sex offender who is on parole tried to get personal information from women who were shopping at University Village in Seattle, police said.

The man was gathering signatures, addresses and phone numbers for a fake petition outside a store in the shopping center, University of Washington police said.

A store manager told police that the man refused to leave the area and was "heckling" a woman who was walking to her car. She yelled at him to leave her alone, police said.

Seattle police were called and ordered the man to leave.
