KEY CENTER, Wash. —
Authorities and Department of Fish and Wildlife agents said they had received numerous calls about the bear in the last few days near Jackson Lake.
On Monday afternoon, a black bear weighing 350 to 400 pounds was trying to get into a home by breaking down its back door, agents said. The homeowner said he had to retrieve a rifle and then shot and wounded the bear.
The resident then called 911.
Pierce County sheriff’s deputies and wildlife agents said they tracked the wounded animal for about 90 minutes. SLIDESHOW: Bears In Western Washington
When the bear was found, it reared up and was fatally shot by a sheriff’s sergeant.
Resident Gerald Eckert said he had seen the bear, which was the largest he’d ever seen, in his back yard Monday morning and called authorities.
Fish and Wildlife agent Phil Johnson told KIRO that the incident was the first time he could remember a bear being so aggressive that it would try to break into a home during daylight hours.
