Silverlake Elementary In Federal Way Locked Down After Robbery Nearby

FEDERAL WAY, Washington —

Silverlake Elementary School in Federal Way was locked down Tuesday afternoon while police searched for a man in a nearby robbery who showed a knife, Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said.

The lockdown was lifted at about 3 p.m., but the search for the man is still in progress.

The man was shoplifting from a Rite Aid on Southwest 336th Street in Federal Way and waved a knife when someone confronted him, Schrock said.

The man fled and came close to the school, which prompted the lockdown, Schrock said. A YMCA in the area, formerly the Norman Center, was also locked down for a time, but that lockdown was lifted.

Police said they are using K9 units to track the man and believe he is still in the area.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.
