Site Of Huge Greenwood Fire Covered By New Mural

SEATTLE —

Two months after an arsonist wreaked havoc in Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood, the community unveiled an 80-foot-long mural at the site of the fire.

With celebration and fanfare, the Taproot Theater Company and Seattle Mural Art took the wraps off the huge mural to remember some highlights of the fire in the neighborhood's downtown area.

On Oct. 23., an arsonist set fire to the Eleanor Roosevelt building, causing $2 million damage. It destroyed four business and heavily damaged the adjacent Taproot Theatre.

The fire was the most dramatic in a series of arsons that plagued the neighborhood for weeks.

Included in the vividly-colored mural are two smiling men, a bird in a tree, a theatre mask, a firefighter rescuing a cat, cars from the Greenwood Car Show and a variety of other neighborhood images.

One of the most significant images was a phoenix rising from flames, perhaps a sign of the community rebuilding after the fire.
