Sleeping driver blamed for crash, fire, power outage

REDMOND, Wash. —

A crash near Redmond early Monday knocked out power to 1,450 Tanner Electric customers.

Deputies said a man fell asleep in a red car just after 12:30 a.m. while driving home from work.

He veered off Northeast Union Hill Road near 256th Avenue Northeast and slammed into a power pole.

Powerlines fell and a small fire started.

Deputies told KIRO 7 the flames went up the powerline and singed nearby a house.

A spokesperson for Tanner Electric said the crash knocked out power to members in Ames Lake, Redmond and Carnation.

Tanner crews spent hours working on Union Hill Road to replace the pole and install new cable.

They hoped to restore service by 9 a.m.

The driver was not seriously hurt.
