BUCKLEY, Wash. —

It was a close call for the pilot of an ultralight plane after he was forced to crash-land in field outside Buckley on Thursday.

Kenneth Overbey, 77, said his aircraft lost power as he was flying over a rural area in east Pierce County.

Overbey looked for a field to make an emergency landing, coming down in tall grass near South Prairie and 248th Avenue.

"I saw him coming in over the trees," said Cody Davis, who watched Overbey's plane hit the ground, then ran to help. "He was saying, 'Get me out of here. Get me out of here.'"

Davis said gasoline was pouring from a ruptured fuel tank onto Overbey's head. He was freed with only minor injuries. There was no fire.

Chopper 7 video showed the small yellow aircraft upside down in the field. Firefighters flipped it upright as medics treated Overbey nearby.

"The engine just stopped," Overbey told KIRO7 Eyewitness News reporter Kevin McCarty during our noon newscast. "When it stops, you have to look for a place to put it down."

Overbey walked away from the crash with some cuts, scrapes and bruises.
