Small Quake Shakes North Sound

A magnitude 4.1 quake has rattled the area around Deming in northwest Washington.

The University of Washington seismology lab says the quake at 12:53 p.m. was centered 15 miles west of Mount Baker.

In the first half hour, 25 people had responded to the university's Web page describing the shaking as moderate.

Seismology spokesman Bill Steele said it's the largest quake in the state in over a year. The last quake of 4.0 or greater was in August of 2004 near Goat Rocks, south of Mount Rainier.

Steele said the Deming area is pretty seismically active.
