Smoother Sailing At Sea-Tac

SEATAC, Wash. —

Security lines appeared to be normal Monday at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, with enough screeners to handle the passenger flow after very long lines in recent weeks.

Port of Seattle employees were pre-screening passengers, freeing up Transportation Security Administration workers to open more screening lanes, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

The pre-screeners warned passengers to remove metal from their pockets, and help direct traffic. The Port plans to hire 50 more pre-screeners.

Shorter Lines, Happier Travelers

Meanwhile, TSA officials brought in a team of mobile screeners from nearby airports to help handle the rush. Ten employees were at work Monday, and that seemed to be making a difference, said KIRO 7 Eyewitness News Reporter Alison Grande.

All working screening lanes were open Monday. Last week, there weren't enough employees to staff them.

Two weekends of lengthy security screening delays at Sea-Tac, followed by a malfunctioning subway train circuit and a possible security breach last Wednesday, frayed air passengers' tempers.

One recent morning, the line for the Delta ticket counter stretched past the escalators and down a hallway next to the X-ray machines. It was 4:15 a.m.

The airport will be put to the test Thursday, when officials expect an estimated 65,000 travelers on the busy travel day before the Fourth of July weekend.
