Soldier Remembered As 'Hero,' 'Superman'

FORT LEWIS, Wash. —

Family, friends and colleagues of Capt. Drew Jensen remembered him as a "true American hero" during a Fort Lewis memorial on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old was paralyzed by a sniper in Iraq in May. He died after his family followed his wishes to be removed from life support at the Veteran's Administration hospital in Seattle.

"We've all shared a kinship of loss because I know he would have been a good father, a good citizen, and would have raised good children. I don't have a lot of good feelings about his passing," said Capt. Sean Nolan.

Jensen's parents released a statement, saying "Our son was a true American hero."

Before going to Iraq, he told an aunt that he would "take a bullet for a family man so that man could return home."

"Soldier's I've talked with since his passing say things like, 'Capt. Jensen was Superman, and I would follow him anywhere," said Capt. Joe Kocer.

Jensen was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis.

He deployed twice with the brigade in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom; first, from November 2003 through October 2004, and again in June 2006.

The family of Drew Jensen has established a Web site discussing his life, his injury and his decision to be removed from life support.

The Web site is captaindrewjensen.com.
