Standoff Ends In North Seattle

SEATTLE —

A tense standoff between a North Seattle man and Seattle SWAT ended after four hours in the Sunset Hill neighborhood of Seattle.

Seattle Police said the 53-year-old man made angry threats to kill three family members, including his wife. The family members escaped unharmed, but the man refused to come out and police believed he was armed.

"He did not respond to our attempts to contact him," said Rich Pruitt, Seattle Police Department. "We used telephones, we used the PA from the vehicles."

SWAT officers moved in behind an armored vehicle. They discovered the man hiding under a tarp and tossed in a gas canister to coax him out.

It is unclear whether the man had a gun when he was arrested. He could be charged with felony harassment for making threats.

Neighbors told KIRO 7 the man had just had surgery and may have been reacting violently to pain medication.
