State Patrol Airplane Films SUV's High-Speed Ride

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Troopers in a Washington State Patrol airplane recorded a recklessly-driven SUV as it sped pass other cars in Pierce County Thursday night, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Troopers in the plane said they saw a white Cadillac Escalade driving erratically northbound on Interstate 5 from Olympia and passing cars at more than 110 mph.

Using a stabilized aerial video camera with thermal imaging, the troopers in the aircraft coordinated with a trooper on the ground to stop the SUV just north of the Nisqually River Bridge in Pierce County, police said.

The driver, a 24-year old man from Tacoma, was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and a felony drug warrant at about 12:38 a.m. Friday and booked into the Pierce County Jail.

Starting in July 2008, the state patrol began routinely using specially-equipped airplanes in DUI enforcement.
