SEATTLE —

A heavy snow warning is in effect for the west slopes of the central and northern Cascades, the KIRO 7 Pinpoint Severe Weather Center says.

Forecasters expect up to 18 inches of new snow by midday Saturday above 3,500 feet.

Forecasters say the snow is enhanced by a strong westerly flow with the convergence zone intensifying snowfall tonight in the central Cascades.

While skiers and snowboarders welcome the snow, it could make driving difficult on Snoqualmie Pass.

Forecasters says the snow will taper off later Saturday as higher pressure aloft builds off the coast.
