Street Blocked By West Seattle Mudslide

SEATTLE —

A road in West Seattle is closed after falling tree triggered a slide down a steep, wooded slope, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

The slide took place in the 10400 block of 47th Avenue Southwest.

A homeowner told KIRO 7 reporter Jeff Dubois that overnight, a tree at a home above him snapped and the roots broke a sprinkler line. The water had not been turned off for the winter and hundreds of gallons spilled down the slope.

At some point, the saturated ground gave way, creating a 30-foot-wide, 15-foot-deep gully.

Dubois said the road is closed and about a dozen homes are affected by the slide until the city clears the mud, which is about a foot deep where it spilled onto the road.

No homes appear to be threatened by the slide, but one homeowner said he is trying to keep mud and water out of his garage.
