He disappeared when his boat capsized in the Tigris River.

The missing Fort Lewis soldier was one of four aboard a boat searching for armed rebels.

During the search, rescue vehicles stationed themselves along the riverbank.

Fellow soldiers kept their guns trained while searchers hunt for the missing American.

The three soldiers on board the boat were able to make it to shore.

While the search for the missing soldier intensified, an army helicopter crashed nearby. The two pilots on board were trying to save one of their own, when the helicopter fell from the sky.

Officials said they believe the helicopter crash was an accident, not the result of enemy fire.

It's still unknown what caused the boat to capsize but U.S. military officials said they suspected Al Qaeda.

"What you see is a lot of fingerprintings in terms of the tactics and techniques and procedures that are being employed," a military officials said.

The Stryker brigade is about to take over responsibility for Mosul and the rest of northern Iraq.

On Friday, another helicopter crashed shortly after take-off from its base just an hour south of Mosul.

That helicopter was also assisting the Stryker brigade. Both pilots died.
