Students Suspended From Competition In Federal Way

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. —

Dozens of students were suspended from competition in Federal Way. It happened after the district found out students from Federal Way High School attended a party involving alcohol.

30 students were suspended, including 9 varsity players who have been suspended from competition for 60 days. Others face a 5-day suspension.

"Athletics is a privilege, it's not a right," said Mark Davidson, Federal Way School District Deputy Superintendent. "Those kids represent our school and our district as a whole and we hold them to very high expectations to do that."

The students suspended from competition are still in school and can go to practice, but they cannot compete. They include baseball players, cheerleaders, track team members and softball players.

"I think it was a bad mistake and it's their senior year ... but it was their choice so they can't take it back" said Ivanca Frerichs, Federal Way High School softball player.

All athletes and their parents sign a rights and responsibility booklet, and athletes are expected to leave a party if there are drugs or alcohol involved.

"I think that if people are gonna party and do what they gotta do, then they need to pay the price if they're gonna do it," said Spencer Seabourne, Spanaway Lake High School baseball player.
