Suspect In Bellingham Stabbings Charged With Murder

WHATCOM COUNTY, Washington —

Per Olaf Johansson, the man accused of stabbing his father to death and stabbing two other family members and himself, was charged on Wednesday with second-degree murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Whatcom County Sheriff's deputies showed up to a home just outside Bellingham on Tuesday and found three people injured from stab wounds: Loretta Johansson, 64, her husband, Raymond Johansson, 69, and their 13-year-old granddaughter. Raymond later died of his injuries.

Loretta told police that her son, Per Olaf, 32, had ran at her and attacked her in the home, according to court documents, which are also the basis for the following information. The 13-year-old girl said she was asleep and woke up when she heard noise from the attack coming from outside her bedroom. She ran into the living room of the home and saw Raymond, her grandfather, being thrown to the floor and stabbed repeatedly by Per Olaf, her uncle. The girl said she tried to assist her grandfather and Per Olaf came after her. The girl ran into her bedroom and was stabbed in the arm and leg. Raymond interrupted the attack and Per Olaf fled the house. Raymond locked the door and told the girl to call 911.

According to court documents, Raymond was not responsive when emergency workers got to the home and he died at the hospital. The Whatcom County medical examiner's autopsy showed that Raymond had been stabbed at least 30 times.

Police said evidence at the home confirmed what Loretta and her granddaughter said happened.

Loretta told police that Per Olaf had mental health problems and had stopped taking his medication, according to court documents. She said that Per Olaf had been acting different lately and had made statements that didn't make sense to her.

"He hasn't been talking sensible" for a while, the girl said, according to court documents.

Per Olaf admitted to the attacks and said that he had stopped taking his medications and "any street drugs in an effort to cleanse himself," according to court documents. He said he attacked Raymond, Loretta and his niece because he wanted to protect his children.
