WENATCHEE, Wash. —

A 21-year-old man arrested in the death of a Chelan County sheriff's deputy over the weekend was ordered held without bail at a preliminary court hearing on Monday.

Jose Sanchez Guillen was told he faces an aggravated first-degree murder charge in Thursday's shooting of Saul Gallegos. An arraignment will be scheduled in the next two weeks, court officials said.

The search for Guillen ended at an abandoned trailer home in Connell Sunday, a sheriff's official said.

Accused Cop Killer In Court

Guillen was taken into custody without incident about 2:30 a.m. Sunday about 150 miles southeast of where Deputy Saul Gallegos was shot and killed, Chelan County sheriff's deputy Mark Mann said.

It was not immediately clear how long Sanchez had been at the residence.

A gun was found in the single-wide trailer, but not the deputy's .40-caliber Glock semi-automatic gun authorities thought Sanchez may have taken, Mann said. He did not know on Sunday the type of gun found, where it had been located or who it belonged to.

Mann said a second man also apparently staying in the home came out when officers arrived and confirmed that Sanchez was inside. The man, who authorities did not identify, was questioned and soon released.

Deputies negotiated through an interpreter with Sanchez for about 20 minutes, Mann said.

He said no shots were fired as Sanchez was taken into custody by a team of about 15 law officers that included federal marshals and sheriff's officials from Chelan and Franklin counties.

Chelan County Deputy Killed

Sanchez was taken to the sheriff's office and was held for investigation of aggravated first-degree murder, Mann said.

Mann said deputies had been working on several tips regarding Sanchez's whereabouts from people in the community.

"The task force worked throughout the night on a number of different leads," he said.

He would not divulge details of how authorities determined Sanchez remained in the area, saying only that one of the tips led authorities to the abandoned trailer in their search.

"The community came together on this one," he said. "It really was a community wide effort."

Gallegos' shooting initially prompted a manhunt that stretched all the way to Mexico. U.S. marshals, the FBI, immigration officials and police agencies in Western states had been advised to be on the lookout for Sanchez.

By Saturday, however, Mann said authorities had concentrated their search in the Wenatchee region.

Mann said Sanchez had shaved his head and face since the shooting.

Gallegos, 35, who had worked for the sheriff's office since January, stopped Sanchez on Thursday evening for investigation of driving with a suspended license.

The young man pulled his car into a driveway on Washington 150 in Manson and tried to flee on foot, but Gallegos chased him and a struggle ensued, Mann said.

At least two shots were fired, he said, one striking Gallegos in the head. Ballistics and forensics tests were pending to determine whether Gallegos was shot with his own gun or another weapon. That could take up to two weeks, Mann said.

Sanchez's 40-year-old mother, Maria Belen Guillen, was being held for investigation of rendering criminal assistance and an unrelated count of forgery. She had been driving a white Chevrolet pickup truck Sanchez had later been seen in.

Gallegos was married with four young sons. He worked for the Chelan town police for seven years before joining the sheriff's office.

He served for six years in the Army Reserves and worked as a detention officer at the Chelan County Juvenile Center before becoming a Chelan officer in 1995. In 1997 he was the town's police officer of the year.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday afternoon at the Chelan High School Gym, Mann said, with a secondary site available if the crowd overflows the school. Police officers will participate in a motorcade from Wenatchee to the event.

Gallegos will be buried in Mexico, Mann said.
