Suspicious Package Left Outside Federal Building

SEATTLE —

Police reopened Second Avenue in Seattle after a suspicious package outside the Federal Building caused authorities to close the downtown street early Tuesday morning.

Police closed Second Avenue from Spring Street to Madison Street to vehicular traffic for about two hours after someone left a duffle bag just outside the Henry M. Jackson Federal Building.

Police said a man ran up and threw the blue bag and traffic cones at the front entrance of the building at about 5:20 a.m.

The Department of Homeland Security and the police bomb squad were called.

The bomb squad determined the bag was harmless. Police said it contained a sleeping bag.

No one has been arrested. Police said one man questioned by police about the incident was not involved and was released.

Police and federal agents continue to investigate.
