SUV Smashes Into RV Showroom, Trapping Mother, Child

EVERETT, Wash. —

The driver of an SUV that crashed into the showroom of an Everett RV store on Tuesday, injuring a mother and her son, fled and was later arrested, police said.

The crash happened at the Cruise America RV building in the 12200 block of Highway 99 in Everett, the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said. A 26-year-old Bellevue man backed an SUV into the building and fled at about 4:18 p.m. The SUV was found a short time later at a nearby Taco Bell, police said.

A woman, 45, suffered a serious arm injury, police said. Police originally said that her son, 6, had suffered "serious facial injuries" and was transported to Harborview Medical Center, but said this morning that the boy had not been taken to Harborview and they didn't know if the boy was being treated elsewhere for his injuries.

The boy's aunt told KIRO 7 this morning that the boy only suffered a cut to his forehead.

Another man suffered minor injuries and it wasn't clear if he was taken to a hospital, the Sheriff's Office said.

Investigators said they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, but said they weren't sure if the man intentionally crashed into the building.

The manager of the RV store said the driver was apparently looking for a piece of rental equipment and had the wrong address.

According to the police report, the man handed the 6-year-old boy a $1 bill, without saying anything, before walking out of the store.

The store manager said after the driver left, the man put the SUV in reverse, raced across the parking lot and crashed into the showroom, pinning a mother and her son.

"He had to be going 25 or 30 mph to go all the way into the building, pin the lady and the little boy underneath," said the manager of Cruise America, who gave only his first name, Mike.

Tire marks indicate that that the driver continued to accelerate after crashing into the building, pushing the victims toward the back, according to the police report.

"I was underneath some rubbish in the back. About that time, I'm trying to get up, trying to get on my cell phone, trying to get 911," Mike said.

Mike said for a moment, the SUV's driver stopped, but then he suddenly hit the gas again, burning holes in the carpet to escape.

"He immediately spun his tires, literally inside the building, drove out, and some very nice people across the way got his license number," said Mike.

Mike said he had never seen the driver before, and did not know why he crashed his SUV or whether it was intentional.

The driver was arrested and booked into the Snohomish County Jail on suspicion of hit-and-run and vehicular assault.

The driver is expected in court at noon on Wednesday.
