SWAT Team Gasses House After Home Invasion

SEATTLE —

Explosions from tear gas canisters fired into a Seattle home shook the neighborhood early Friday as police tried to get a suspect in a home invasion to surrender.

The incident began at 8:30 p.m. Thursday when two men forced their way into a home on 47th Avenue South in Seattle and held a brother and sister at gunpoint.

A 911 hang-up call from the home brought police to the scene and officers arrested one man but could not locate the other, whom they believed to still be inside the house.

After hours of trying to persuade the man to come out, police shot multiple canisters of tear gas through the windows of the home. When no one came out, a SWAT team stormed the house and found it to be empty.

Police said they know the identity of the other man involved in the incident.

"We do have a vehicle that belongs to the suspect so we know who we're looking for and it's just a matter of time before he's in custody," said Seattle police spokesman Renee Witt.

The gas fired into the home clouded the air in the neighborhood, which was closed to traffic during the operation. KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Rick Price said he and his camera crew were about a block away from the scene when they felt irritation in their noses and a mild choking sensation in their throats.

Police reopened the neighborhood at about 4 a.m.
