SWAT Team Raids Home Of Robbery Suspects

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Three men were arrested Tuesday in a home invasion that left an 85-year-old man pistol-whipped in one of three home invasion-style attacks recently in the South Sound.

A SWAT team raided the suspects' home as KIRO 7 Eyewitness News camera looked on.

Conclusive evidence links William Friedrichs, 21, Brett Thomas, 18, and Jarred Columbo, 26, to the Sunday morning attack, Olympia Police Lt. Maynard Midthun said.

The men were booked into jail for investigation of robbery.

"These were the people involved," Midthun said, although he wouldn't elaborate on the evidence. The three were arrested when an officer spotted a vehicle matching a tipster's sketchy description of an old maroon car.

Thurston County detectives sat in on interrogation of the three to see if they were involved in a separate invasion of the house of County Prosecutor Ed Holm just outside the city limits on Monday morning.

Masked men awakened Holm at gunpoint, ransacked his house, and left the prosecutor and his wife bound with telephone cords.

"Thurston County is very interested in our suspects," Midthun said.

The men are also subjects of interest in a separate robbery that happened Sunday but wasn't reported until Monday, Midthun said. A 72-year-old man told police that two men entered his house through an unlocked sliding door, pointed a gun at him and demanded money.

Home invasions are rare in the Olympia area, and the potential for bloody violence prompted police to make the case a priority, Midthun said.

"We're lucky that this crime did not result in more serious injury," Midthun said. "We're very lucky that we don't have a homicide investigation."

The elderly victim of the pistol-whipping is recovering at home.
