SEATTLE —

In a drill that law enforcement agencies are calling the first of its kind, SWAT teams dropped from choppers onto a moving ferry to simulate a response to a terrorist takeover.

Washington State Patrol Lieutenant Ron Mead said the drill is a joint operation between the Coast Guard, WSP, King County Sheriff’s Office and Seattle police to rehearse boarding a ferry from sea and air in the event a terror attack on a ferry should occur someday.

Mead said Monday’s drill is different because rather than using a ferry docked at the Bainbridge Island maintenance facility, the drill will simulate a real-life event on a ferry that’s under way.

Crews boarded the training ferry at Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge Island and the exercise will occur as the ferry travels between Vashon Island and Edmonds.
