Tacoma Cancer Survivor Robbed Days After Returning From Hospital

TACOMA, Washington —

As if battling cancer wasn't enough, a Tacoma woman is now dealing with the fallout of her home being burglarized while she was out picking up medicine.

Joanne Grant was diagnosed with breast cancer in June. She's fought the illness, but the road to recovery hasn't been easy.

"I'm like this whole new person," she said. "I can beat this."

Grant was released from the hospital last week after undergoing a double mastectomy. Days later, burglars broke into her apartment while she was at the store picking up medicine. The burglars took her TVs, her DVD player, her jewelry and pain medicine.

"It was devastating," Grant said. "I still sleep with the light on at night because it was so violating."

Grant dipped into her 401(k) to help cover the costs related to the robbery.

"They took a locket; it had a picture of my two boys in it that I'll never get back," she said.

Grant said she's taken comfort in flowers and cards from friends, who she plays with in a softball league.

"To come by and say you care -- I have the most amazing family in the world," she said. "My softball family and my parents."

The thieves are still at large, but Grant said she's moved on and is focused on getting better.

"I don't wish them ill," she said. "Maybe there's another way to do things than to steal from people who work hard."

Grant is scheduled to start chemotherapy treatment in August.

Police haven't made any arrests in the case.
