Tacoma Man Pleads Not Guilty In Rape-Torture Case

KING COUNTY, Washington —

A man accused of torturing and raping a woman in what police said was a "torture room" on his Tacoma property pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of kidnapping, rape and assault.

Police said John Joseph Hauff Jr, 66, picked up a 24-year-old woman in Seattle last month and offered her $100 to engage in sexual role playing. The woman agreed, but said that Hauff quickly moved beyond what she had agreed to. The woman asked Hauff at one point if he was going to kill her and he said, "We'll see," police said.

Police said the woman was able to escape after showing Hauff that she had texted Hauff's license plate number to her boyfriend.

Hauff's trial will take place in King County because the woman was originally picked up in Seattle.
