Tacoma Teachers Strike Looms, A Week Before Scheduled Start Of School

TACOMA, Washington —

School is scheduled to start next week in the Tacoma School District, but teachers say they're frustrated over their contract offer and are ready to strike.

Several hundred teachers crowded into a Tacoma School Board meeting Thursday night to voice some of their complaints.

The district says state cuts have put schools in financial trouble. The district laid off 100 workers and closed two schools last year. This year, the district has asked teachers to take a 1.9 percent pay cut and teach more students.

Teachers have countered by asking for raises and smaller classes.

Both sides are far apart, but with school scheduled to start next week, the board is staying positive and says it's planning to open school as scheduled.
