SEATTLE —

For four months, all court records regarding suspected serial killer Gary Leon Ridgway have been off-limits to the public.

KIRO Team 7 Investigators last week hired an attorney to challenge the notion everything had to be sealed. We've already convinced the judge to hand over some documents.

Confidential sources first helped KIRO Team 7 Investigators report that suspected Green River Killer Gary Leon Ridgway moved out of the King County Jail in mid-June. Now there's documented proof from previously-sealed court files.

A June order "direct(s) that the defendant be transported by King County law enforcement officials to an undisclosed facility ... for purposes of an evaluation by experts."

We now know the evaluation was related to Ridgway's mental competency.

He reportedly had to pass that test before being allowed to cooperate with detectives. Sources said Ridgeway first went to Western State Hospital under an assumed name. Then, the accused serial killer came to stay in an apartment at an office park next to Boeing Field, a complex that doubles as the Green River Task Force headquarters.

The motion we obtained also indicates there have been a number of other records ordered sealed by the Honorable Richard Jones, the judge overseeing the Ridgway case.

We'll keep digging to bring you the latest on this serial killing investigation.
