PORT ANGELES, Wash. —
The crash happened south of Sequim on a Forest Service road in the Slab Camp area around 5 p.m. Sunday.
Deputies said the three teens were in a Ford F-250 driving down a gravel road.
The 17-year-old driver, Tyler Braithwaite of Sequim, swerved to avoid a deer and slammed into a tree, said the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.
Passenger Rachel Myers, 18, of Port Angeles was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with leg and facial injuries.
The other passenger, 16-year-old Michael Fleming of Sequim, was transported to Olympic Medical Center with a broken wrist and facial lacerations.
The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the crash.
Washington State Patrol says if there is a deer in the road, drivers should keep going straight and hit the brakes, even if it means hitting the deer.
Troopers say if drivers try to swerve at highway speeds the jerking of the steering wheel will cause the car to go out of control.
