PARKLAND, Wash. —

A Pierce County teenager was killed in a crash on Christmas Eve, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

Police said a suspected drunken driver may be to blame.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene near Parkland Sunday. Investigators said a driver was speeding when he ran a stop sign and then slammed into another car broadside.

The teenage driver in the broadsided vehicle died at the scene.

“This happens very routinely. We catch only a small fraction of the people who actually get involved in these collisions, and as a result, it’s very difficult to prevent,” said Deputy Eugene Allen with the Pierce County Sheriff's Office.

The alleged drunken driver was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police said he will most likely face several criminal charges once he's discharged.
