Teen Survives House Fire But Loses Pets

SEATTLE —

The Red Cross is assisting a family of three after fire destroyed their Green Lake home on North 76th Street. The fire started just after 9:00 p.m. Tuesday near the fireplace.

By the time firefighters arrived, flames had moved from a corner of the first floor through the roof of the second floor. Firefighters found a 14-year-old girl outside, who was home alone at the time of the fire.

A neighbor reacted when he heard the young teen screaming. "I saw the orange glow, I heard the screaming, then the adrenaline kicked in," said Brian Jones. "I ran down and my neighbor across the alley from them was already running in there. I grabbed two fire extinguishers."

Neighbors said they used two hoses and two fire extinguishers, but the fire overpowered them all.

Six dogs and one cat died inside the home. Two cats were rescued; one received oxygen. "It actually woke up after a few breaths of oxygen and started meowing," said Scott Helfrich, Seattle Paramedic.

The 14-year-old girl was taken to Harborview Medical Center and treated for smoke inhalation. The Red Cross will provide the family with clothing, food and possible shelter.
