A 16-year-old boy had two friends over at his family's home in Auburn when he found his father's .22-caliber rifle, and the gun fired, sheriff's spokesman John Urquhart said.

The victim, also a 16-year-old boy, was shot in the face and taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition, Urquhart said. He was updated to serious condition Monday, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

"It appears at this point to be accidental," Urquhart said.

Detectives were interviewing the boy believed to have fired the rifle and a 16-year-old girl who was at the house at the time of the shooting.

No adults were at home when the shooting happened.
