Teens Seen With Airsoft Rifles At Graham School

GRAHAM, Wash. —

Nine teen boys have been arrested after they were on the grounds of Graham Elementary School with Airsoft rifles Friday afternoon.

The principal called 911 around 4 p.m. to say there were six or seven teenagers walking near the school with Airsoft rifles, the sheriff's office said.

Pierce County sheriff's deputies responded to the 911 call and after about 20 minutes, seven of the teens were in police custody, deputies said. More teens showed up at the school later and also admitted to having Airsoft rifles on school grounds, said sheriff's spokeswoman Lynelle Anderson.

Seven Airsoft rifles were recovered, Anderson said.

The principal locked down the school during the incident, where five students and several teachers were still on campus, deputies said. They were all escorted out of the building by police around 4:35 p.m.

Video from Chopper 7 showed armed officers running from building to building and searching the school grounds.

Video also showed the seven teens handcuffed and sitting on the grass while being questioned by police.

Deputies said they do not believe there are additional suspects or weapons on school grounds, but they did conduct a room-by-room sweep as a precaution.

SWAT and negotiation teams were also called to the school that's located in the 10000 block of 204th Street East.

Investigators said they do not have a motive for the incident.

Anderson said the boys may have been on their way to some nearby woods and may not have realized they were breaking the law.

Anderson said all nine boys will be arrested on charges of bringing a dangerous weapon onto school grounds. It is a crime to take anything that appears to be a weapon onto school grounds in Washington state, even a toy gun.

Airsoft rifles fire only plastic pellets.
