The Facts About Oil Heat

Related

It's Comfortable.

Providing comfort is what Oil Heat does best.

Heating oil produces the hottest flame of any home heating fuel, heating your home faster, with less fuel, and consistently keeping your home at the temperature you want.

It's Economical.

The price of energy is an important factor in determining the total heating costs for heating your home. For example, the installed cost of an electric heat system may look attractive, but when you calculate the annual operating costs for electric power, any first-time savings vanish. The same is true for natural gas. When you add the monthly customer charge to your heating bill, equipment and labor costs, and the comparatively short life of the equipment, it makes a difference.

The best way to compare energy prices is to calculate the price per BTU for each fuel. The more BTU's a fuel has, the more heat you get - and heating oil contains the most! Just look at the comparisons below:

Heating Oil Contains 138,690 BTU's per gallon

Propane has 91,500 BTU's per gallon. 1.52 gallons equal the heat content of 1 gallon of heating oil.

Natural Gas contains 100,000 BTU's per gallon. It takes 1.4 therms to equal the heat content of 1 gallon of heating oil. Kerosene has 131,890 BTU's per gallon. 1.05 gallons equal the heat content of 1 gallon of heating oil.

Electricity has 3,413 BTU's per kilowatt hour (kwh). 40.6 kwh equals the heat content of 1 gallon of heating oil.

These are the facts about oil heat. Oil Heat is clearly the hottest choice and the most economical way to heat your home.

It's Efficient.

Oil Heat equipment has always had a significant efficiency advantage.

The U.S. Department of Energy measures equipment efficiency through A.F.U.E.'s (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiencies) and rates new Oil Heat equipment very high - from 83 to 94% efficient.

It's Safe

Heating oil is one of the safest fuels ever developed.

It won't burn in a liquid state. You could drop a lighted match into a bucket of heating oil and the oil would extinguish the flame, just like water. To burn, it first must be vaporized, and then heated in a sealed chamber above 140°F.

It's non-explosive. As a liquid, it can't combine with air to form an explosive mixture.

Exposure to carbon monoxide is almost non-existent, especially compared to natural gas, propane, or wood heat.

One of the cleanest combustion sources available.

It's Clean.

Heating oil is a clear, rosy-red liquid that burns very clean.

The Environmental Protection Agency says that modern oil burners are one of the cleanest combustion sources available.

It's a Good Value.

Because of Oil Heat's high BTU content, it costs less per unit of heat produced.

To equal the heat content of 1 gallon of heating oil, it takes 1.4 therms of natural gas, 1.52 gallons of propane, and 40.6 kwh of electricity.

It's your Security Blanket.

With your own supply of fuel on-site to heat your home, you have the independence and peace of mind knowing that the heating oil in your tank is yours to use whenever you want, and that your heating oil dealer's delivery system ensures you'll always have an adequate supply on hand, no matter what the weather.

Thinking of switching your home heating system. Think again! The costs of switching are higher than you may think. In addition to the cost of new equipment and tank decommissioning costs, there's the difference in equipment life to consider (30 years for oil, 11-14 years for natural gas). The Consumer Energy Council of America Research Foundation says, "In 95 out of 100 cases, it makes economic sense to stick with oil, and if an energy-related investment is desired, to invest in conservation."
