Total Of Suspicious Mount Vernon Fires Rises To 17

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. —

A fire that erupted behind a grocery store Monday night is the 17th in a string of suspicious fires that have occurred in Mount Vernon over the last four months, fire officials said.

Crews were dispatched to the latest fire just before 11:30 p.m. at the Food Pavilion in the 1500 block of North 18th Street to find some bushes burning on the south side of the store. The end of a wooden store display and several plastic shopping carts were destroyed or damaged.

On Sunday night, two storage sheds were destroyed and a third was damaged in a fire behind the Summerset Apartments.

Investigators are searching for the origin of the fires that have occurred in Mount Vernon since mid-October.
