WASHINGTON —
Trader Joe’s is recalling peanut butter that has been linked to 29 salmonella illnesses in 18 states.
The Food and Drug Administration and the federal Centers for Disease Control said Saturday that the store's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter is the likely source of the outbreak.
A spokesperson for the store said the product was distributed to Trader Joe’s stores nationwide, and comes in a 16-ounce plastic with an expiration date stamped below the lid.
Before the recall, Trader Joe’s removed the product from their shelves.
More than two-thirds of those who became ill were children under the age of 18, and no deaths have been reported.
Customers who have purchased the peanut butter are urged to not eat the product, and to dispose of it or return it to any Trader Joe's for a full refund.
The agencies are investigating whether any other items sold at the store could be contaminated.
Customers with questions may contact Trader Joe's Customer Relations at (626) 599-3817.
