Crews Repairing Roads Buckled By Heat Wave

Seattle road repair crews are working to repair concrete and asphalt damaged by last week's record 103-degree heat.

Evidence of the problem was seen Monday on the Aurora Bridge, where crews had to dig out a damaged expansion joint to replace it.

The problem continues throughout Western Washington, where sidewalks in four counties are being fixed after buckling.

In last week's withering heat, part of Interstate 90 near Preston had to be re-paved, after drivers complained about the heat-rippled road surface.

East Marginal Way, which was rough before, now has both swollen and sunken spots caused by hot asphalt.

Some drivers likened the road to driving on a roller coaster.

Rider Bruce Fisher said the road is dangerous for motorcyclists and he plans to complain to the city.

"If this problem doesn't get corrected, somebody's going to have an accident sooner or later, probably a biker more so than a car," said Fisher.

Officials across the region are assessing what needs to be repaired.
