Highway 3 just north of Bremerton was closed Wednesday afternoon while troopers investigated a fatal accident in which a truck's wheel came off and hit another car.

A truck traveling northbound lost the wheel, which flew into the southbound lanes near Chico Way. It smashed into the windshield of a small blue car, killing the woman driver.

The car veered off the roadway and flipped down an embankment.

The long-haul truck was driven to a nearby mall parking lot, where detectives scoured the metal frame, searching for clues to why the wheel broke loose of its bolts.

Investigators were reconstructing the accident scene and also looking at the truck's maintenance records.

The lunch hour accident forced the closure of a lane of Highway 3, causing at least a mile-long backup.
