North Cascades Highway Could Open Early

A light snowpack in the Cascades could mean an early opening for the North Cascades Highway.

Transportation Department crews will start clearing the stretch of Highway 20 on Monday and could have it open in mid-March.

The highway has been closed since Dec. 13.

Over the last six years, the re-opening work has begun between Feb. 29 and March 18, the Department of Transportation said. Over that same six-year period, the pass has reopened for traffic between March 22 (in 2001-the earliest ever) and May 7.

The latest opening ever was June 14 in 1974.

Weekly updates and photos will once again be posted on the WSDOT SR 20 Web page when the work begins.
