SEATTLE —

A portion of West Lake Sammamish Parkway in Bellevue could remain closed for the next month while crews repair damage from a mudslide that shut the roadway down Sunday.

The stretch of road between Northeast 2nd to Southeast 22nd may look OK, but that’s because the slide undermined the roadway. Workers who watched the slide overnight told KIRO 7’s Jeff Dubois the ground under the slide appears to have stabilized, but that repairs could take a while. Crews are also assessing whether more of the road needs to be closed.

“We’re not gonna reopen it until we’re sure it’s safe,” one worker said. “Public safety has to come first.”

Tons of mud crashed down into driveways and garages during the Sunday morning slide, and four homes had to be evacuated.

“We just saw the whole hill coming down, and it looked like something from the Mt. St. Helens videos, just coming all the way down,” one homeowner said.

A water main and gas line broke during the slide, so some homes are without water and gas.
