Report Recommends Concrete Barriers Replace Cables on I-5

EVERETT, Wash. —

Concrete barriers should replace cable barriers along a stretch of Interstate 5 near Marysville, according to a review of the barriers that was ordered after a crash killed one person and wounded another last February.

After the Feb. 13 crash, Gov. Chris Gregoire ordered a review of the cable median barriers. An expert hired for the review said the state should replace cable barriers with 10 miles of concrete in the area, The Herald of Everett reported.

State Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen told The Herald she supports the expert's findings that show a concrete barrier would do a better job of preventing cross-over accidents.

Since 2000, eight people have died in cross-over crashes on I-5 near Marysville.

The report's findings will be released next week.
