SEATTLE —

Beginning Sept. 24, the Seattle bus tunnel will close for up to two years to be retrofitted and upgraded for use by both rail and bus.

As of Monday Sept. 12 during peak traveling hours only buses will be allowed on Third Avenue downtown. The buses that currently run in the tunnel will travel on surface streets during that time.

Seattle police will be monitoring key intersections throughout September, but beginning in October, traffic violations will be issued.

The Downtown Seattle Association and Sound Transit have teamed up to encourage and keep downtown busy for bus riders. Coupon booklets will be handed out to bus riders. Coupons include multiple downtown businesses.
