SR 20 Re-Opens, But Danger Lingers

For the first time in weeks, people in a town isolated by a rockslide are no longer trapped.

The North Cascades Highway reopened, but danger still lingers on State Route 20 between Newhalem and Diablo in Whatcom County.

The road has been closed since November 9, when 2 million cubic yards of rock fell onto the road. A second slide and dangerous rocks above the highway has kept the road closed since then.

Only Diablo residents, their immediately family, members of the National Park Service, WSDOT, and Seattle City Light crews will be allowed to use the road.

The road will be open between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., December 18 through December 22, weather permitting. Flaggers will be at either end of the closure directing vehicles through the slide zone one at a time.

A spotter will be posted at a location so as to accurately spot any potential rock fall danger.
