Tacoma Woman Killed Crossing Busy Street

Man Driving Mini-Van Told Witnesses He Was Blinded By Setting Sun

TACOMA, Wash. —

An 82-year-old Tacoma woman was hit by a car and killed Monday evening while she was crossing a busy four-lane street.

Doug Carter was writing a letter to KIRO 7 Eyewitness News about traffic problems on South 84th when he heard a loud thud.

When he went outside he discovered the woman hit was his close friend and neighbor. She was hit by a mini-van headed west in the curb lane as she was crossing 84th Street South. What makes this tragedy even more difficult for Carter is that this woman wasn't the first to die here.

Doug's wife was killed three years ago when they were in their driveway.

"Tish was the most loving person," said Carter.

Now, Carter says it's like reliving that painful day all over again.

He's outraged that more drivers on busy South 84th aren't paying more attention to the road and speed limit signs.

Tacoma police say the driver who hit the elderly woman Monday evening was not speeding, but was blinded by the setting sun.
