SEATTLE —

A teenager is recovering from a serious head injury after a strange hit-and-run incident on Christmas Eve near Port Orchard.

Austin Wiedmaier said he was walking with a friend around 8 p.m. Sunday along Alaska Street outside Port Orchard when he was hit by a car he never saw coming. The teenager said the driver had been traveling with her lights off seconds before he was hit.

“I saw headlights pop up out of nowhere,” Wiedmaier said. “The car was just right there and I instantly just jumped and got smacked by the car.”

The impact was so hard that it tore off the bumper of the car and sent it skidding down the road.

Wiedmaier said the driver stopped, asked if he was all right and then began picking up a mirror and bumper that were broken off of the car.

“And I apparently attempted to help the people pick their bumper up off the road,” he said.

The couple quickly drove away.

Wiedmaier didn’t know it at the time, but he had suffered a serious head injury. In fact, he remembers little about the moments after he was hit. Only when he was taken to the hospital did he and his family realize how bad his injuries were.

“I had brain hemorrhaging, scabs and bruises all down my legs, a concussion,” he said.

The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office said the driver was a woman, 19 to 20 years old with blond hair and an average build and height. The passenger was a white man, also 19 to 20 years old with dark hair and an average build.

Wiedmaier’s friend said both people were “freaked out” before they left the scene.

“Honestly, I’d just like to contact the people and just be able to talk to them, and know what happened, and have them take responsibility for the medical bills,” Wiedmaier said.

Kitsap County investigators said they would also like to talk with the couple. They said they’re hoping the driver will come forward, or that someone who knows her or has seen some unexplained damage to her car will let them know where to find her.
