TACOMA, Wash. —

A toddler was hospitalized after his father unknowingly struck the boy with the family pickup Monday.

Heart-Wrenching Accident, Fight For Life

The 19-month-old apparently got out of his house in Olympia and got behind the truck just before his father drove to a store.

The man didn't realize he had hit the boy. The boy's mother found the child in the driveway, critically hurt.

The boy was airlifted to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma. He was in critical condition Monday evening.

"My heart just goes out to them as parents," Veronica Bump, a neighbor, told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

"[He] had no idea the child was outside the house or in the yard or anything and just left for the store," she said. "When he backed out, he thought he went over the curb, and he looked back and saw nothing so he kept going."

Neighbors said they were sending their thoughts and prayers out to the injured boy and his parents.

The boy's parents issued a statement thanking people for their prayers and saying the boy appeared to be improving.
