SEATTLE —

A full slate of weekend activities, including closures in both directions of the State Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct, could mean delays for drivers heading into downtown Seattle. The Washington State Department of Transportation urges drivers to map out routes in advance, allow extra time and prepare for more congestion than usual.

Northbound SR 99:

* Preparations for the Seafair Torchlight Run will close northbound SR 99 between the West Seattle Bridge and the Battery Street Tunnel for several hours starting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 30. * The northbound lanes are expected to reopen by 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Southbound SR 99:

* WSDOT crews will close southbound SR 99 from the Battery Street Tunnel to the West Seattle Bridge from 11:59 p.m. Saturday, July 30, to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, to install a new stormwater drainage system at the south end of the viaduct.

The drainage work is part of construction under way to replace the south end of the Alaskan Way Viaduct with a side-by-side elevated highway. Skanska, WSDOT’s contractor, is on track to complete the southbound lanes of the new SR 99 roadway and start demolishing the southern mile of the viaduct this October.

Downtown Seattle Events:

* The Seattle Mariners have three home games this weekend: 7:10 p.m. Friday, July 29, 1:10 p.m. Saturday, July 30, and 1:10 p.m. Sunday, July 31. * The Seafair Torchlight Run officially begins at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, July, 30. The route includes parts of the Alaskan Way Viaduct and several downtown streets. * The Seafair Torchlight Parade begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July, 30. The route includes several downtown streets.
