EVERETT, Wash. —

Lawyers made their opening arguments Thursday in the Everett murder trial of John Anderson, who is accused of killing his former girlfriend, Rachel Burkheimer.

The 22-year-old Everett man is charged with aggravated murder in the abduction, beating and killing two years ago of the 18-year-old Marysville woman. If convicted, he faces life in prison without parole.

Snohomish County prosecutors said Anderson killed Burkheimer out of a mix of jealousy and his belief that she posed a threat to a crime gang he helped run.

Defense lawyers said Anderson was not responsible and that witnesses are testifying against him only to help themselves with plea bargains.

Five co-defendants pleaded guilty and agreed to testify against Anderson.

Another co-defendant, Kevin Jihad, was convicted earlier this month of first-degree murder for ordering the slaying.
