Get RSS Feeds From KIROTV.com The frozen 80-pound Florida black bear is the one that left two men hibernating in the Seminole County Jail for a bit. Fish and Wildlife Officer Guy Carpenter received a tip that Wilson Lam and Ting Huang were looking to buy a dead bear, even though it's illegal in Florida.
Carpenter set up a meeting at Mullet Lake Park, in Geneva, between the men and an undercover officer. The officer brought the still-frozen bear and a recording device that agents say proves the men knew they were committing a crime.
Officer Carpenter moved in after the men handed over $300.
"He said he thought he'd purchased a pig and then said he didn't know it was a bear," says Carpenter.
Relatives of the men didn't want to answer questions Monday and they barely said a word after they were arrested.
Fish and Wildlife officers won't speculate what the men would do with the bear when they left the park, but there certainly is a lucrative black market for bears and their organs.
Earlier this year in Virginia, federal officials found dozens of bear parts. Just the gall bladder can sell for $3,000. Some Asian cultures believe the bear organ can fight high blood pressure or impotence.
The statute Carpenter used to charge the men hardly has claws. It's a misdemeanor that can get you a $500 fine. It's a fine that barely makes a dent in the profits from a bear sale on the black market.
The person who called in the tip to Fish and Wildlife will get a reward, but there's no word yet on how much.
