The accident happened at 10:43 a.m., when a Ford Ranger pickup truck heading eastbound crossed over the center line and smashed into a Pontiac Grand Am. The crash caused a chain reaction accident involving three other cars.

The driver of the pickup was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital with head injuries and a broken back. The 47-year-old woman behind the wheel of the Grand Am was taken to St. Joseph's Hostpial with two broken legs and a fractured pelvis.

People in the other cars suffered minor injuries.

The wreck left the smashed-up pickup truck up against a railing, its rear wheels hanging over the edge of the bridge.

The bridge was closed for about 45 minutes. Lanes were opened one at a time until all lanes re-opened about 2:30 p.m.
